Bass drums are often produced from only one bit of tree trunk, usually mango or cedar, that is hollowed out by both lathe or hand. Older, greater drums ended up crafted from the dense but light-weight body weight cottonwood tree which isn't located nowadays. Some bass drum shells are made of maple ply-wood, others have a barrel stave construction.
